Ronnie McNutt Live Facebook

Ronnie McNutt was a 33-year-old American man and US Army Reserve veteran who tragically took his own life on August 31, 2020, during a Facebook livestream. His death, which involved him shooting himself in the head, became widely known due to the shocking nature of the event and the subsequent viral spread of the video across various social media platforms.

Born on May 23, 1987, in New Albany, Mississippi, McNutt served in Iraq during the Iraq War and was known to have struggled with mental health issues, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stemming from his military service. He worked at a Toyota plant and was reportedly facing personal challenges, including a recent breakup and potential job loss during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the day of his death, McNutt began a livestream on Facebook, during which he was intoxicated and handling a rifle. His friend, Joshua Steen, noticed the stream and attempted to intervene, hoping to alert authorities and stop the broadcast. Despite multiple reports to Facebook about the concerning nature of the livestream, the platform did not intervene until after McNutt had already taken his life. The New Albany Police Department was alerted but did not enter McNutt's apartment until they heard the gunshot.

Following the livestream, the video of McNutt's suicide circulated rapidly on social media, with snippets appearing on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. This widespread dissemination raised significant concerns about the responsibilities of social media companies in moderating content that depicts self-harm and suicide. Many users were inadvertently exposed to the graphic footage, leading to calls for better protective measures on these platforms.

McNutt's friend, Steen, criticized Facebook for its delayed response and the failure to prevent the video's spread, arguing that the company could have acted more swiftly to protect McNutt and others from witnessing such trauma. The incident sparked discussions about mental health awareness and the ethical responsibilities of social media companies in handling sensitive content.
