Jayshawn Boyd, a 22-year-old man from Newark, New Jersey, suffered a severe brain injury after being brutally attacked by fellow inmates inside the Essex County Correctional Facility in September 2021. The vicious assault, which was caught on video, showed seven men repeatedly striking Boyd with various objects, including a microwave, water cooler, broom, and a bucket of bleach, even after he lost consciousness.
As a result of the attack, Boyd was left in a coma for over two months. The severe brain injury has rendered him incapable of independent walking and eating solid food, alongside impairing his short-term memory. His mother, Nacolia Boyd, has stated that her son is not the same and can no longer do things on his own, such as going to the store or dressing himself.

Three inmates, Byad Lockett, Darryl Watson, and Isaad Jackson, were convicted for their roles in the attack. Lockett and Watson were found guilty of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, while Jackson was only found guilty of the final charge. Lockett was sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison, to be served consecutively after his 12-year sentence for a 2019 homicide. Watson also received a 20-year sentence for attempted murder, to run consecutively with the 70-year sentence he is currently serving for murder.
The Boyd family has filed a lawsuit against Essex County and correction officials, alleging that the duration of the beating with no intervention by jail guards was unacceptable. The attack lasted for two minutes and 23 seconds, and the sole officer on duty in the unit had not received academy training.
